Abstract

Pulses are important and essential nutrient in daily diets of human diet. India is leading in production of several major pulse crops. However, still there is lot of scope for improvement of pulse production in our country for self-sufficiency. Insect pests are major constraint in the cultivation of short duration as well as long duration pulse crops. Moreover use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides leads to various problems from accumulation of residues in food grains to environmental pollution. Organic way of cultivation is the need to improve the quality as well as export value of various plantations. Different methods of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) have been developed without use of any synthetic inorganic chemicals. Various methods of organic plant protection strategies includes cultural, mechanical, behavioural, biological control methods and use of botanical for the insect pests attacking pulse crops has been elaborately narrated in the chapter. The non-chemical approaches for post harvest management of insect pests are also highlighted.
