Abstract

Kitchen garden or home garden often called as Potager (in French) is an area which is used for growing vegetables and fruits for family needs (Tripathy, 2018). Generally, local varieties are grown which have less nutrient requirements and tolerance or resistance to different diseases and pests as compared to hybrids or modern cultivars. As various vegetables and some fruits are grown in an enclosed area in intensive manner, incidence of pests and diseases are generally higher. Usually in kitchen garden chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not applied as it is based on organic or natural farming approach and hence pests and disease management is a challenging task. Diseases and pests cause significant loss inyield and nutritional qualitywhen proper nutrient management method is not adopted. Although managing the diseases and pest populations in kitchen garden is a very cumbersome task, several organic and ecofriendly approaches like NSKE, pheromone traps, soil solarization can be successful. This article highlights different ecofriendly and organic management aspects.
